The main use is a three-way catalytic converter, the carrier component of which is a porous substrate mounted in a special exhaust pipe. It is called a carrier because it does not participate in the catalytic reaction itself, but is covered with a coating of precious metals such as platinum, rhodium, palladium and rare earths. It is the most important off-board purification device installed in the exhaust system of automobiles.
